The Cross Country Season Has Begun!

28. August 2010 category Uncategorized

Again, great job to everyone and a big thank you for your support and hard work with summer fundraising.  We did it!  Unfortunately, we can’t stop now.  Next season may also be up in the air with the economy still in the tank.  So, with the season underway we not only look to nice fall weather and fast race times but also towards the continuation of the Carthage Cross Country program into the future.  The Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce has organized a run with the help of  Army personnel from Fort Drum.  This run, scheduled for September 18th will benefit the Carthage Running Club in our efforts to continue to support running sports and opportunities for kids in the Carthage community.  The run consists of two courses.  The first, a 10k course will leave the Carthage Park and head EAST along NYS RT 3 toward a turn around point in Hewitt Park.  After the turn around, runners will run passed the entrance to Carthage Park and turn right onto North Washington St to the rear entrance of the park along the entrance to the old Armory and current NYS Police barracks to the finish in Carthage Park.  The second course, a 5k will follow the same startand ending routes but will turn around much sooner (1.55 miles sooner to be exact) and return along the N. Washington St. route.   The cost of the run is 10$ with 100% of the proceeds going to Carthage running club.  Thank you to all of the corporate sponsors who have stepped up to support the cause.  Also, thank you to the Fort Drum soldiers who will be manning the water stations along the way.   Tshirts and refreshments will be available in the park following the race.

We Did It!!!

22. August 2010 category Uncategorized

Congrats on all the hard work raising funds this summer.  Now, lets move the hard work to the trails, hills and track!  Practice starts tomorrow and the weather is going to be “interesting”.  There is still much work to be done to make this a successful year but more on that later.  For now, hydrate and get a good night sleep.  I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow morning.  Remember that we meet at the big Maple in front of the High School at 8:00 am.  If it is raining (and it most likely will be) you can sit inside the school on the steps near the Athletic office.

HERE WE GO!!!!

XC Meet

TEMPO: A tempo run is a run where you maintain constant effort that is slightly challenging. A good guage for this pace is to take two steps to both breathe in and out. Be sure to do this after you are warmed up. This is also known as a lactate threshold run. If you are familiar with the percieved exertion scale (PE), you would run about a 7 (out of 10).

FARTLEK: This is a swedish word that means “speed play”, pick a distance, an object (like a mailbox, tree or teleophone pole) and speed to it. The speed you run will be determined by the distance of the object. Then, recover by running to another object at a recovery pace (PE=2-4), DON’T WALK!!! Focus on staying tall, relaxed and in control while “speeding”.

CORE: Any activity that strengthens the muscles of the abdominal region, butt and hips as well as sides. There are many things that achieve this. A quick search on the internet will yield many routines.

CROSS TRAIN: Any activity that gets the heart rate up for a period of time yet is different from running. Biking, swimming, hiking, weight training etc.
